Fears were growing today for the safety of a 74-year-old man after an intensive search failed to find him.

Former high-ranking Salvation Army officer Lawrence Jardine has been missing since 2pm on Saturday when his wife dropped him off in Sharp Street, near Bradford's Central Library.

Mr Jardine, a former assistant chief secretary of the Salvation Army in the UK and Ireland, was staying with friends in New Hey Road, East Bowling.

He told his wife he would make his own way there after visiting the library but failed to return.

Police and his relatives said today they were extremely concerned for the pensioner, of Beckingham, Kent, who also suffers Parkinson's disease.

They fear his mobility might have been affected without the vital medication he was taking.

An intensive search yesterday along his most likely route out of the city failed to uncover new clues. Officers have also been scouring CCTV footage in the hope of tracking his movements after leaving the library on Saturday about 4pm.

Two unconfirmed sightings on Sunday, at 8.30am between the roundabouts on Wakefield Road and another at 2.30pm near Bowling Park, led officers to believe he was heading towards East Bowling.

Mr Jardine is white with grey hair and brown eyes and wears glasses. He was carrying a black document case and had a dark raincoat with him.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "When someone is elderly and they have problems like dementia it can be very hard to find them as it's hard to predict where they might go.

"It's a worry for their families but there is a team of officers working on this, following all possible leads."

Anyone who has seen Mr Jardine or has any information on his whereabouts is asked to call Bradford Central police station on (01274) 376459.

Meanwhile, concerns were growing today for the welfare of a 38-year-old man still missing without his medication.

Alan Dobson, of Undercliffe, Bradford, has not been seen since he left his home on Thursday, July 29.

Photographs of Mr Dobson, who was known to frequent Bradford city centre and often visited the Bhs restaurant, have been distributed across the city but have failed to uncover his whereabouts.

He is small with dark balding hair and hazel eyes.He was last seen wearing a dark sweater and stonewashed jeans.

He is believed to have been in Leeds last weekend.

Police would like to hear from anyone with any information on (01274) 376059.
