The big event of the weekend for Ilkley Harriers was Saturday's Borrowdale Fell Race, over 17 miles with a staggering 6,500ft of climb.

Ilkley Harrier Dave Cheesewright was a superb 75th in 3h47m15s; followed by Vet 60 Geoff Howard (pictutred) 112th in 3h 59m 58s - an incredible performance that clinched the British Fell Championship title for Geoff in the Vet 60 class to add to his English title.

Then Harriers had Jim Ryder 158th 4h 14m 51s; Alison Eagle 210th 4h 28m 00s; Nicky Kime 228th 4h 34m 17s; Ashley Hardwell 231st 4h 35m 17s; Jo Foster 266th 4h 47m 38s; Ian Marshall 302nd 5h 00m 54s; Peter Sibley 369th 5h 28m 45s; Joyce Marshall 372nd 5h 30m 50s.

There was a huge field of 473 runners for a Lakeland race, Simon Booth of Borrowdale led them home in 2h50m 37s. Thanks to the many Harriers supporters who were out on the course.

Closer to home, Sunday saw the second running of Otley AC's Round Hill Fell Race over 9M with 1100ft of climb.

Official results are not yet to hand but Ilkley had (not necessarily in this order) Mike Baldwin, Jamie Hutchinson, Ewan Welsh, 18th Dennis Ackroyd 1h15:06, James Lind, Andy Sumner, Brian Melea, Bob Payne, Carole Armitstead, and Amanda Parnaby 1h47.47.

Harriers were racing on the road in Sunday's very hot Askern 10. Participants reported that the undulating course had become mysteriously 'very hilly'; fast flat stretches seemed never ending as the temperature rose and the wind increased.

Terry Lonergan ran 67.43, faster than last year and good enough for first V55 and 41st place out of 338. Andy Wolfenden ran 78.07 to finish in the top third of the field.

Ilkley Harriers is a friendly club, training from Ilkley Lawn Tennis and Squash Club every Tuesday at 7pm. See their web site www.ilkleyharriers.co.uk for more information.
