SIR - I think I have an idea as to where the Peacemakers could start. It would mean going over the head of Cllr Rhodes though: a close examination of that area in your front page War Memorial photo shows that Tommy Atkins still has no bayonet.
Bearing in mind that after some eighty years his Lee Enfield is probably completely choked with leaves and whatever it is that pigeons do, all the poor man has to defend us with is a bayonet with no blade.
How he came to lose it I have no idea -- it can't have been his fault, he's only made of bronze, after all. So who committed this ghastly act of vandalism? And why hasn't it been put right?
I know people who would cheerfully do away with the War Memorial claiming "it glorifies war". It doesn't; besides being a noble centrepiece for our town, it recalls the shock and grief that comes as a result of war, and the unrequited determination to make peace.
The War Memorial deserves better than to be a showcase for the work of vandals.
