SETTLE Cricket Club hopes of matching their rugby brethren by winning a place in the Lancashire Cup final at Old Trafford were denied in an absorbing semi-final at Marshfield in which the visitors from the Bolton League managed the improbable feat of overcoming the home side's 255-7 total.

There was general agreement before Westhoughton batted that if they were able to reach their target, they would be deserving winners and in doing so, they were good value for their place in the final.

That they were helped by the intervention of the weather was the only element of the victory which ever-so-slightly tarnished a tremendous contest. The visitors ultimately claimed their place in the showpiece by reaching 238-5 in 40.2 overs - the winning target being reduced on a set formula which is applied when time is lost to the weather.
