AS one door closed, another one opened at Airedale Hospital after a health minister launched a new £500,000 children's unit.

In the same week the hospital announced two wards would be closed and 25 jobs axed as part of a bid to claw back debts of £5 million, the new children's facility was opened by Dr Stephen Ladyman, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Community.

Funded by Airedale NHS Trust, the new unit comprises two treatment rooms, a consultant accommodation suite with examination rooms, a room for the community paediatrician for child protection and facilities for the Children's Outreach Team.

Dr Ladyman said: "Facilities such as these really benefit the children. It means they are treated in an appropriate environment which means their experience of the NHS is less traumatic.

"I would like to see more facilities like these across the country as it really is a way forward in providing appropriate and quality care for children."
