Bridlington Town 4

Guiseley 1

IT was hardly ideal preparation for embarking on their FA Cup run. Guiseley followed a 0-0 draw with Yorkshire rivals Frickley Athletic -- currently propping up the UniBond Premier Division - with their first defeat of the season on Tuesday at Bridlington Town.

As in the game against Frickley on Saturday Guiseley had plenty of chances on their trip to the East coast. They again included 16-year-old striker Danny Forrest, who when he made his debut on Saturday as a second-half substitute, was believed to be the youngest player ever to represent Guiseley at this level of football.

The youngster's form in junior and reserve team football has been attracting the attention of Bradford City.

Still without new centre-backs Kevin Graham and James Stansfield, Simon Parke remained in the centre of defence. Guiseley started brightly and Parke forced a save after five minutes quickly followed by Bruce Hogg hitting his shot wide.

Bridlington however soon found the mark through Paul Palmer and he made it 2-0 on 26 minutes.

After Keiron O'Brien had shot wide Bridlington extended their lead to 3-0 in the 35th minute when Joe Connor netted.

Guiseley's last effort of note in the first-half came from Hogg who had his shot tipped over.

Guiseley still had plenty of possession in the second-half but Bridlington moved further ahead to 4-0 with an 87th minute goal from Gareth Collinson before substitute Peter Sumner bagged a consolation goal for Guiseley in time added on.

Guiseley should have been boosted by their pre-match dressing room visit from Olympic silver medal winning rower Debbie Flood on Saturday.

The Guiseley student was invited to Nethermoor Park to receive some acclaim for her medal winning exploits in Athens.

She was introduced to the players and the crowd, remained to watch the game and present the Man-of-the-Match awards afterwards. After a string of scoring chances for Guiseley it was little surprise that Frickley 'keeper Marc Shackleton walked off with their award. Mark Stuart got Guiseley's.

Bruce Hogg had Guiseley's first chance on three minutes but hit the bar. This was to be a foretaste of Guiseley's luck against the managerless Frickley side - former Guiseley assistant Phil Sharpe having resigned from the Frickley hot seat.

Efforts from Mark Stuart, Scott Jackson and Dave Henry came and went and Jackson in particular just could not seem to get things right.

He had volley's saved, headed just over the bar on a number of occasions and in the second-half started to pull his shots wide.

Guiseley always looked as if they may rescue something with further efforts from Jackson, Jeremy Illingworth, Dave Henry and substitute Peter Sumner.

Fellow sub David Cooke had perhaps the best chance when late in the game he failed to net when Henry's shot was blocked.

Young Forrest showed he had plenty to offer when he came on and he set up Jackson for a header which was saved by Shackleton.

So now it is to Saturday and the visit of Chorley in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup (3pm).

Guiseley Reserves 1

Altrincham 1

Guiseley Reserves drew 1-1 with Altrincham on Tuesday night in their Lancashire League game.

It was nip and tuck throughout but Guiseley grabbed the lead in the second-half with a stunning strike from Mark Peacock.

Altrincham then applied pressure and 15 year-old goalkeeper Dean Henderson came under siege for a while.

It was little more than Altrincham deserved when they levelled late in the game although it was disappointing for the young Guiseley side. They must however concentrate for the full 90 minutes.
