A community has rallied round to help fund a sensory room for a toddler with a rare genetic disorder.

Miles Bradbourne is one of about 100 youngsters in the UK to have the incurable MPS 1 Hurler Syndrome.

Doctors believe Miles, from Pool-in-Wharfedale, will only live until he is about six so mum Naomi is determined to make his life as wonderful as possible.

And her first fundraising event, a health and beauty evening at the Village Hotel in West Park, Leeds, has already been a great success, raising £3,650 towards the campaign.

"We had over 500 people at the event, which was great. We really promoted the night and invited so many friends, but I was amazed at how many people have been involved," she said.

Naomi will use the money to create a sensory room for Miles and take him travelling.

"I want to build up a memory of experiences for him and for me," Naomi said.

Miles, who is 20 months old, has a rare chromosome deficiency which was discovered eight months ago, when he was taken to hospital after suffering a fit.

The condition suffocates all the soft tissue in the body and affects a child's development.

Each case is different, but sufferers may be unable to walk or speak or may go deaf and blind.

But little Miles has already proved doctors wrong by learning to walk by himself.

"At the moment he's very well. He has had eye and heart tests and there has been no deterioration, which is fantastic," said Naomi.

Miles' fund has been boosted by a dinner, dance and raffle held by Rawdon firm H2B Journal which raised £19,000 to be split between him and another youngster.

Naomi added her thanks to the Virgin Vie staff who ran the event and those who attended.

She is now hoping to organise other fundraising events, including a three peaks walk and is hoping to do the Great North Run next year for Miles.

Donors can leave money at Samantha Hair Design on Main Street, Rawdon.
