Vital child care courses at a Bradford community centre could be axed if people do not start enrolling on them.

With the courses due to start at the end of the month, just one person so far has registered for the child care course at Wrose Community Centre.

It is one of many courses causing concern for people at the community centre which also offers courses in French, Spanish and basic maths.

They are provided to the community centre by Shipley College and need a minimum number of people before they can begin.

Bob Lee, co-ordinator at the centre said: "The level of interest in the courses has been really disappointing.

"I am confident that the French and the Spanish courses will fill up but there are other valuable training opportunities on offer and it would be a shame if they were cancelled."

Among those courses which could be at risk include the Making Choices course, developed by SureStart, which gives people an insight into what working in child care is like to help them decide whether working with children is right for them.

Language support and creche facilities are available if needed for people who undertake the training.

Dionne Foulger, workforce development officer for the Early Years and Child Care Service in Bradford, said: "There has never been a better time to work in early years child care and play work. The Government's national child care strategy aims to ensure that affordable, accessible and high quality child care is available in every neighbourhood.

"More than 2,500 child care places have to be provided in Bradford so lots of extra child care staff will be needed to achieve this target."

The Making Choices course has already been run successfully in various different community centres and schools across the district.

Miss Foulger said: "One group who received the training said as a result of the making choices course they now have 12 parents who are going to pursue careers in child care."

Not all the courses are vocational, training in life solutions, confidence building and flower arranging are also on offer.

Most of the courses are free and are open to anyone. The courses hope to run from Monday to Friday during the day and in the evening.

They start on September 27. For more information or to enrol call Mr Lee on (01274) 588832.
