Selby 1st XV 22, Keighley 1stXV 17 - Keighley threw away important league points in a lack lustre display at Selby. For the first 20 minutes they flattered to deceive, running in three tries in quick succession before tamely handing the initiative to the opposition.

Memories of last season's 48 point haul on the same ground were re-awakened as Keighley's busy start rattled the home side. Good work by full back Matthew Cox paved the way for the first try, slick handling enabling wingman Asa Firth to go round his man in style to touch down in the corner after five minutes play.

At this stage the Keighley pack was contesting well against the bigger Selby forwards. A strike against the head at a scrum in the home 22 metre area maintained the pressure allowing Keighley to force a five metre line out from which Andy Bennett secured good possession and skipper Rob Riley forced his way over from the ensuing maul, with Johnny Harrison converting.

Selby responded with a penalty goal by wingman Dan Porter, but Keighley were soon on the attack again. They grabbed their third try when scrum half Scott Amos charged down an attempted clearance by home full back Chris McDonald and cleverly regathered to cross unopposed.

From this point onwards the Utley side's grip on the game gradually slackened. The Selby pack began to take control, with lock forward Jason Cicero and No.8 Matthew Mills dominating the line outs. Scrum half Matthew Smith's elusive running opened gaps in the Keighley defence, which were increasingly exploited by the home centres Shaun Austerfield and Andy Gabel. A fine break by Austerfield was checked by a brave last ditch tackle by Firth as the Keighley line was threatened for the first time in the match, and Selby's efforts were rewarded when stand off Paul Scott burst over for a try following a tapped penalty and Porter added the conversion.

By half time the scores were level as Keighley contributed further to their own eventual downfall. Harrison's missed touch finder from a penalty award led to a counter attack by Selby orchestrated by the live wire Smith and finished off under the posts by McDonald after some flimsy tackling by Keighley in mid field and Porter's conversion was a formality.

With the wind at their backs in the second half there was still every reason for optimism in the Keighley ranks. This was, however, soon dispelled when Cicero broken powerfully and with Keighley's defence again at fault, Porter crossed for the match-winning try.

The Utley men could find no way back. Selby's confidence was high and Keighley were unable to raise their game sufficiently to threaten. Forwards Andy Bennett, Evan Griffin and Leigh Sugden were the pick of a disappointing pack and Asa Firth and Matthew Cox showed up best in a somewhat disjointed back division. Coach Tim Brunskill was justifiably frustrated when his side had squandered what should have been a match winning lead. The loss of two points even at this stage in the season could well be vital.
