The Celts had threatened to end this first qualifying round FA Cup tie at Marine on Saturday but last night they emphatically put it to bed in front of their own fans to earn a trip to Altrincham.

The hero was Michael Midwood who bagged a brace of trademark stunning goals.

He opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a 22-yard shot into the bottom corner and put the Celts 3-0 up with a 20-yard thunderbolt from the inside left channel nine minutes into the second half.

Sandwiched between Midwood's two efforts, Stefan Zoll had carved himself an opening to slot in. Curtis Bernard wrapped up the rout when he shot home from near the penalty spot after the game's best move.

"I am pleased with the performance and, with us getting our three substitutes on, we had 14 who all contributed to the win," said Celts boss Lee Sinnott. "The main thing is that it was the right result. In the two previous games against Marine we have had the same amount of chances and yet lost one and drawn one.

"This time they went in and that will do the confidence a power of good.

"It is very satisfying that three of the forwards have all notched and Amjad Iqbal and Andy Shields did really well in midfield. We can look forward to Altrincham a week on Saturday now but I just hope we can take this performance into the league with games against Prescot Cables and Lincoln United coming up."

Left-winger Roy Stammer returned after a three-week lay-off and Sinnott applauded his impact on the game and the result.

"Having Roy back was a big bonus. Teams know he is a danger and that frees up space for the others.

"It helps out a lot and was a factor in the other boys getting the goals."
