The unique setting of Saltaire is to be captured for posterity in a new film - and its residents are being asked if they would like a starring role.

Pooka Productions is planning to shoot a digital short film in and around the village in early October and is looking for people to star in the film and homes it can use for interior shots.

The film - which has a working title of Goodnight - is the story of a teenage boy dealing with the death of his grandmother.

It has been commissioned by film agency Screen Yorkshire and the UK Film Council as part of its Caught Short scheme to promote filming in Yorkshire.

Production manager John Watts said: "It is a drama about a young lad called Wes who has always got on with his nan who is a fun, energetic person.

"She's very ill and going down hill, and he is having to come to terms with his gran dying basically.

"The film will be about 20 minutes long and is one of four films to be done in the county through Screen Yorkshire.

"It will be shown at film festivals around the world and will highlight Yorkshire. It will be a sort of calling card for Yorkshire."

The company is looking for locations in Saltaire to use, particularly interiors for Nan's house and also looking to cast Nan and the boy's mother from the local community.

Mr Watts said: "Wes looks up to his nan. She needs to be a bit batty, but full of energy, someone who can get on with younger people.

"The mum, who is about 40-odd, doesn't get on with Wes as well as she'd like to because he always goes to his nan with problems."

The film was written by Jonathan Lowe and will be directed Martin Radich who chose Saltaire as his location after scouring Yorkshire.

Mr Watts said: "I think the village is right for the characters and story Jonathan has created. There is a sense of history, a certain spirit here that perfectly matches the film I envisage. The houses have soul."

Casting has been taking place in Liverpool and Leeds for other characters in the film and there are no definite names as yet.

The filming is likely to take place over two days in Saltaire in early October.
