A 25-year-old man who crashed his car into a house wall when trying to overtake was going so fast that bits of the engine flew through the front window of the house, a Court heard

Balal Maskeen was jailed for seven months at Bradford Crown Court for dangerous driving which left one of his passengers with a punctured lung.

Prosecutor, Samuel Green, told the court Maskeen, who did not have a driving licence, had only bought the car that day.

He said the married father-of-one decided to take it out and was travelling at "terrific speed" down Howarth Road, Heaton, in Bradford. It was while speeding towards Toller Lane in December last year, Maskeen tried to overtake a car.

Mr Green said: "There was frost on the road and he lost control, skidded almost 180 degrees, mounted the kerb on the other side, and crashed into a substantial wall. The wall was demolished and the car flipped over on to its side.

"Such was the impact that parts of the engine dislodged and went through the living room window."

Mr Green added that when the police arrived they thought they were dealing with a fatal accident.

All three occupants survived, however, and were taken to hospital were Maskeen was kept in for a month to be treated for a fractured arm, a punctured lung and damage to his kidneys.

Although one passenger walked out without treatment the other was kept in for two weeks and treated for four broken ribs, a broken collar bone and a punctured lung.

Judge Roger Scott was told that Maskeen, of Northside Terrace, Lidget Green, is trying to overcome a drug problem and deeply regretted his actions.

As well as dangerous driving he also pleaded guilty to driving without insurance and driving not in accordance with a licence.

Passing sentence Judge Scott told him he was amazed anyone got out of the car alive. He said: "You were driving your own car with two bald tyres on an icy road far, far too fast. You lost control and hit a house wall with parts of the engine going straight through the window of the house. The car was a right-off and one of your passengers was in hospital for two weeks.

"This was a serious accident and you're lucky to be alive and so are your passengers."

Maskeen was also banned from obtaining a licence for two years and was told he will have to take an extended test.
