Eleven year-olds Tashina Earle and Tyrone Abraham from Ilkley Karate Club were victorious in the English Karate Governing Body Children's Championships held at Ponds Forge Sports, Sheffield.

The major tournament was staged over two days and brings together some finest karate competitors in the England.

Four Ilkley karate students were selected to represent the Shukokai Karate Union as karate associations from all over England select their best competitors.

The tournament is a best of the best as the finalists can go on to represent England at European and World level.

Tashina was part of the SKU girls' senior team which picked up a bronze medal in the team kumite (free fighting) event. Still on a high from the team event she then went on to win yet another bronze medal in the girls' individual open grade under 45 KG category.

In the semi-final Tashina took the lead early on and just missed out on a place in the final by one point in the last five seconds of the bout.

Fellow club member Tyrone Abraham gained a silver medal in the male 10 to 11 year category after storming through the elimination rounds. The final bout was so close that the match had to be settled by a judge's decision.

Other Ilkley students competing on the day were Andrew Johnston (13) and Ken Corless (12) who won bronze medals in the senior team kumite event.

Club Instructor Mark Outterside said: "To have four Ilkley students selected for this major tournament is an achievement in itself and to have two finalist at this level is fantastic.

"The club's results just get better and better year on year, with the recent record breaking grading results it has been an incredible month."

The Ilkley students are now looking ahead and hoping to do well at the British Open Karate Championships in October.
