Moortown 16

Baildon 38

Dominant in the pack, Baildon climbed to fourth in Yorkshire Division Three on the back of their first win at Moortown for over a decade.

And it put the Jenny Laners in good heart for what could be a crunch clash at home to second-placed Northallerton next Saturday.

Scrum half James Dawson put the visitors ahead with a try in the second minute, Nick Lister converting.

And Baildon crossed again in the 16th minute from an

excellent back-row move, No 8 Phil Wilson picking up and driving, Hugh Gumbs proving unstoppable from about ten yards out, Lister again adding the extras.

Visiting hooker Andy Rockett, who made a difference to the pack, was sin-binned in the 20th minute for retaliation.

But far from conceding any points when they were down to 14 men, Baildon improved their tally with a Lister penalty in the 29th minute.

Ironically, when Baildon were sorting themselves out on Rockett's return, Moortown bagged a try.

They then added a penalty via their scrum half to make it 17-8, but with half-time looming Gumbs broke through seven tackles to go over from 20 yards out, Lister converting to make the half-time score 24-8.

Moortown were first on the scoreboard in the second half with a penalty in the 42nd minute, again from their scrum half, but Baildon pulled away 12 minutes later with a pushover try by Wilson.

Dave Hemming, playing on the wing, marked his return from injury with a try in the 63rd minute, Lister's conversion extening Baildon's lead to 36-11.

Moortown's full back bagged a try in the 69th minute, but Baildon had the last laugh with a Lister penalty in the 80th minute.

Wilson said: "It was a good all-round team performance, and the Northallerton match will be a true test of how far we have come."

Aire-Wharfe Cup winners Roundhegians still lead the table with four wins from four and Baildon are among four clubs with three wins from four matches. Shock result of the day was Skipton's 11-7 home win over Barnsley.
