A breast cancer surgeon from Shipley is facing disciplinary action after lying on his CV to get a job at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

After meeting in private at the weekend the professional conduct committee of the General Medical Council found many charges against Robert Phipps proved after a lengthy hearing which started in May.

He was accused of deliberately misrepresenting his career history to get a job at Bradford Royal Infirmary as a consultant breast surgeon in 1998.

The committee members will now re-convene later this month to decide how serious the misconduct is and what action to take against him. They could decide to strike him from the medical register.

Mr Phipps will be invited to offer mitigation and they will also hear submissions from Christoper Tehrani, the barrister acting for the GMC.

Mr Phipps, was sacked by hospital bosses in 2000 after they checked out his CV and career record.

He has always denied lying. He claimed that he had not deliberately sought to mislead them or be dishonest.

The hearing heard allegations that Mr Phipps, 49, claimed to have held senior registrar positions when he had only been a locum and did not have the qualifications for a consultant's position.

He is also said to have exaggerated his role in some medical papers.

But he said he denied misrepresenting his career saying he had not set out to include every job he had undertaken.

Mr Phipps was employed by the BRI in 1998 - after a career in London, Portsmouth and New Zealand.

The hearing heard how hospital chiefs started investigating after a senior consultant spotted Mr Phipps at Bradford Royal infirmary during a visit and was surprised to see him there as he did not believe he was qualified enough to be a consultant.

He was accused of exaggerating his career record to make himself eligible for a consultants' job which eventually brought him to Bradford.

The hearing, in Manchester, resumes on October 25.
