Kyle Brassington has some important decisions to make over the next few months.

The only certainty is that the 17-year-old Ilkley member wants to play men's professional tennis.

But whether he pursues that aim via Jim Edgar's full-time squad at Bolton Arena, where he is currently based, or whether he goes to college in America next autumn remains to be seen.

"I have put myself down for some International Tennis Federation (ITF) men's tournaments in the United Arab Emirates in the new year," said Brassington, who left Ilkley Grammar School in January to embark on what he hopes will be the road to glory.

"There is also a three-week circuit in North Africa on hard courts, which are my favourite surface, but I also want to play the British Tour events in Hull and Nottingham this winter."

By way of a diversion, the unsponsored Brassington has won through to the Boys' Under-18 Masters finals of the Sunday Telegraph/Center Parcs Junior Grand Prix at the La Manga Club in Spain from November 6-13.

This prestigious Sky Sports-televised clay court event has been won in the past by none other than British Davis Cup player Alex Bogdanovic.

Brassington has qualified fourth of the six under-18 boys' finalists after winning a tournament at West Bridgford (Nottingham) and reaching the final at Doncaster and the semi-finals at South Leeds and Tipton.

Brassington, who was coached at Ilkley by Nick Fitzpatrick before moving to Bolton, also intends to qualify for the Under-18 Masters Grand Prix this winter, which would confirm his place among the top 20 under-18 boys in the country.

He lost in the second round of the Ariel National 18 and Under Championships at Nottingham in August, having won three qualifying rounds and the first-round proper.

But Yorkshire under-18 player Brassington has already been making his mark at senior level, qualifying for the first-round proper of British Tour events at Nottingham and Sheffield, and losing in the final qualifying round last week at Bath.

The wiry Brassington describes himself as having "a big serve and a big forehand", but knows he has to spend plenty of time in the gym if he is to fulfil his potential.

Improving his stamina would also help him to thrive on his least favourite surface - clay.

And whether he will follow his Ilkley clubmate Ross Connolly to college in America will depend on his SATs results.

Brassington is currently funded by his mum Sue, his dad David and stepdad Nigel Price. Anyone who can help Kyle should get in touch with Sue on 01943- 602296 or Nigel on 07974-258473.
