Highways officers from two authorities are to look at possible safety schemes for a road which claimed the life of a 50-year-old man.

Trevor Stokes, of Langford Road, Burley-in-Wharfedale died in hospital after the car he was driving was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle near the Maple Grange Lodge on the A660 between Burley and Otley.

His funeral was held at Burley's parish church this week.

Now the rising death toll on the road has re-ignited calls for urgent action to improve safety on the narrow stretch which is between two fast-moving bypasses.

Leeds and Bradford highways officers are being asked to look at the possibility of safety improvements for the accident black-spot, and Burley Community Council is being urged to write to Leeds stressing its concerns about the stretch of road.

At a meeting of Burley's forum last week Coroner's officer and community council member John Sparshatt described the stretch of road as "extremely dangerous."

And he said a local undertaker had told him he had arranged at least four funerals after fatalities on that stretch of road over the last 20 years.

He said he had personally noticed that the local farmer had had to rebuild the wall alongside the road on almost a monthly basis.

He stressed: "We have lost a person within this community and we are extremely worried about this particular stretch of road."

He added: "I want the community council to write to Leeds to express their concern about this particular stretch of road."

Mr Sparshatt said the section of carriageway was dangerous because cars were coming off a wide fast road onto narrow road. And he said cyclists, in particular took their lives in their hands when they used the road.

Mr Sparshatt wants to see traffic calming measures such as rumble strips in the short term, with an upgrade of the section in the long term.

Bradford's principal traffic engineer Phil Sawley told the meeting the stretch in question was in the Leeds local authority area, but as it was almost on the boundary with Bradford any schemes could involve both authorities.

Otley town and ward councillor Graham Kirkland is also lobbying for action. He has already conducted two campaigns to get something done about the road, and he has requested a briefing with Leeds Highways officers.
