ORGANISERS of Ilkley Moor Lions Club's annual charity bonfire and fireworks display were delighted when the weather held off enough to ensure another successful event.

The Lions Club, formerly Wharfedale Lions Club, have staged the bonfire and fireworks on the East Holmes Field at Ilkley for 28 years.

It never fails to draw an audience of hundreds of local folk from throughout the district.

Families were out in force to see the bonfire lit by Lions President Tony Ackroyd and secretary Jim Shelton.

The latter has been involved with organising the event for all of its 28 years.

Tony Ackroyd said: "This is a well-established annual event bringing together friends and

families for a safe evening.

Not only is it a worthwhile service and community event but it also raises a considerable amount of money for Lions projects and charities."

The event's main sponsor was once again the Po Sang Chinese Restaurant. Individual sequences of multi-coloured barrages lit up the night sky and drew delighted gasps from the crowd.

The fireworks were sponsored by Rombald's Hotel, Bluebird International Travel, The Candy Box, Mark Russell Furniture Clinic, Pinsharp Photo Services, Special Occasions and the Red Lion Hotel, Burley-in-Wharfedale. The organisers were grateful for the help of the 1224 squadron Wharfedale Air Training Corps.
