Women in Bradford who are leading the way in science, engineering and technology (SET) are holding an event to help encourage a stronger presence of women within the sector in TV dramas.

Staff at the UK Resource Centre for Women in Science Engineering and Technology, based at Bradford College, have organised a seminar in London to bring together TV bosses and women from the field.

Officially opened in September, the £4 million resource centre was funded by the Department of Trade and Industry to boost job prospects for women in SET.

The aim of the one-day seminar is to encourage a greater representation of women working in SET on TV and to look at how the use of female role models can inspire more women to pursue such careers.

Centre director Annette Williams, director of the UK Resource Centre which was officially opened in September, said the event would also result in funding being awarded to writers and directors to support a new TV drama based on SET.

She said there were just two recent TV dramas, BBC1's Silent Witness and Waking the Dead which feature women in roles within this sector.

"It's one of the centre's objectives to raise the profile of women in SET as a whole and one key area is within the media," she said.

"When you think of how these fields are represented on the TV there are very few but its an important contributor to change stereotypes and it's not going to work on its own."

The centre also works towards encouraging more women to take up SET careers, raise the profile of women in the field and to create a database of women experts.

It was joined forces with PAWS (The Public Awareness of Science and Engineering Drama Fund) and other organisations to hold the seminar at the Institute of Electrical Engineers, in London on November 22.

PAWS offers a range of services, including script writing and development for new TV drama ideas and workshops for writers and producers.
