A passenger escaped serious injury after a bus was attacked on a Keighley estate.

The single-deck Zone bus was targeted as it made its way down Coronation Way, Braithwaite.

A stone smashed through an offside window of the vehicle, causing a glancing blow to a passenger.

The incident, involving a bus on the 703 Braithwaite circular route, happened at about 5.15pm, on Monday.

Operator Keighley & District Travel (K&DT) said the vehicle's on-board CCTV cameras had captured images of the incident on film and the material had been passed on to the police.

About two years ago services in the same area of the estate were temporarily withdrawn following similar attacks but until Monday there had been no recurrence of the problem.

Jeff Smith, the company's operations manager, said: "We want to be able to provide a safe and secure service for all our valued customers in that area, where the vast majority are law-abiding citizens, and we are taking this incident very seriously.

"We are working closely with the police to identify the culprit and bring the person responsible to justice."

The passenger hit by the missile was badly shaken but otherwise not seriously hurt.

Damage to the vehicle is estimated at about £1,000.

Chief Insp Simon Atkin -- of Keighley police -- said that with the assistance of the digital CCTV evidence from K&DT, he was hopeful arrests would be made soon.

He added: "We are working closely with partners such as K&DT to ensure incidents of this nature are kept to a minimum.

"Any incidents of this kind will be investigated and dealt with very seriously."
