Garforth Town 2

Silsden 3

Brazillian World Cup star Socrates was on a plane back to South America when Silsden rolled in to town to take on his new club - and he missed a stunning game.

The Leeds club hit the headlines when the soccer legend produced a 15-minute cameo performance, but by the end of their pulsating cup tie with Silsden Garforth's only resemblance to Brazil was their yellow and blue strip.

The early signs were not good for the Cobbydalers as they found it difficult to adjust to a very fast playing surface and Town went in front after only two minutes when Blair smashed the ball past the helpless Foulger.

Silsden were unlucky not to equalise when Rosser flicked on at the near post, Gill volleyed onto the bar and Rhodes was wide with the rebound.

Blair's had an attempt ruled offside but sprung the offiside trap and lobbed over Foulder's head for their second goal putting Garforth firmly in command.

Silsden gradually began to string their passes together and in one passage of play the Red Army celebrated a period of control involving over twenty passes. The sounds of 'Ol' from the visiting fans lifted the Cobbydalers.

Garforth conceded a penalty when Longley was pushed as he attempted to head home. Rhodes hammered in the sport kick to give Silsden a lifeline.

Silsden were transformed in the second half. Lund, Reed and Rosser denied Town time and space as Silsden midfielders bossed the game. Hedges, in particular was revelling in the battle and Hoyle, Longley and Appelbee were combining well.

The equaliser, when it came, was pure Brazil. Rhodes drove the ball forward to Hoyle who flicked it to Appelbee. Another flick over the defence and Longley was through to rifle the ball home - and he celebrated with two somersaults.

Hedges almost gave Silsden the lead minutes later but his volley from Rosser's near post header was straight at the keeper.

Garforth then handed the tie to Silsden. An unnecessary hand ball in the penalty area left them with 10 men and 3-2 down as Rhodes again blasted home the spot kick to secure victory.

n Dale Hoyle produced a goal scoring masterclass after returning from a hamstring injury.

He scored all four goals in Silsden's 4-2 North West Counties League Cup victory over New Mills.

It took him just three minutes to get on the score sheet when he shot from close range through a melee of players. His second was a classic near-post header.

Appelbee spun around one defender on the touchline and nut-megged another before crossing from the by-line. Hoyle reacted quickest and nodded the ball home.

His hat-trick came from a deep Holden cross. Candlin, in the Millers' goal came to meet it but Hoyle merely deflected the ball over the stranded keeper's outstretched arms.

His fourth was pure class. Standing on the edge of the area he received a cross from Hedges. The ball was flicked up with his right foot and volleyed with his left into the far corner of the net.

Hoyle might have been short of match practice but his positional sense created time and space to leave the Millers' defence mesmerised.

What of the supporting cast? Silsden had a much greater tempo to their game than in the previous home encounter against Norton and might have scored as early as the second minute when Jamie Longley volleyed Appelbee's cross only to see the keeper push the ball away for a corner.

Appelbee revelled in his role as Hoyle's strike partner using his pace to pressurise the visitor's defence. Longley worked hard in the middle of the park from where Gavin Finn was spreading the play across the field.

At the beginning of the second half West Riding Under-18s captain Steven Throup replaced Reed but Silsden took their foot off the gas and the Millers' came more into the game.

Blackburn hit a rasping free kick into the top corner to make it 4-1 and Senior scored their second but New Mills were never going to fight their way back into the game.

n Now its back to business in the league, on Saturday Silsden face Oldham Town at Cougar Park, kick-off 2.00pm, followed by four away matches.
