VICTORIES by Ashley Goodchild and James Kellett were highlights of Keighley Amateur Boxing Club's annual charity show on Friday.

The sell-out event promoted in conjunction with Keighley Catholic Youth was a resounding success with 11 entertaining contests.

Goodchild defied an early setback when he was caught by a savage right cross and boxed impeccably to out-point Rochdale's Rene Emerson of Hamer ABC.

Kellett's virtuoso performance earned him the Danny Brothers memorial Trophy, awarded to the outstanding Keighley boxer on the show. He displayed an impressive repertoire of punches, including some finely executed left hooks, and possessed far too much class for his gallant but overwhelmed opponent, Liam Holmes of Hull, as he forced a second round stoppage.

Four more Keighley boxers, Vincent Narey, against Troy Cunliffe of Hoyle Mill ABC, Barnsley; Jason Jeffreys against Keiron Mason of Harrogate ABC; Luke Smith against Farid Hairat of Rotherham's Millennium ABC; and Liam O'Reilley against Adam Kelly of Sheffield's Unity ABC, all played noble parts albeit on the wrong end of close points decisions.

Jeffreys contest against Mason was an absolute classic as fortunes fluctuated throughout and it was some tangible consolation to see the Keighley boxer adjudged the best loser of the evening.

Five other contests featured on the programme and brought points victories for Harrogate's Shane Hooton against Hamer's Mike Blackburn; Dave Ambler from the Hard and Fast ABC, Sheffield, against Darlington's Ally Hutchinson. The Millennium club's Michael Birds outpointed Gavin Hinchcliffe of Sheffield's Manaor ABC; Hard and Fast's Gareth Newton beat Hull's Sam Aldridge and Ben Harper from Bradford's Kasmand ABC beat Chris Betteridge from Preston.

The overall presentation of the evening the quality of the contests and the sporting crowd also drew glowing praise from senior Yorkshire ABA officials.

Chief guests at the event included local sporting personalities Lee Duxbury, former rugby league international Terry Hollindrake, Cougars coach Gary Moorby and Keighley's former ABA champion and boxing coach Ronnie Murray.

One notable absentee among Keighley's top boxers was Dominic Crowther who enjoyed an evening outside the ropes after winning both Yorkshire and North Eastern Counties titles. Crowther produced another terrific performance in the National Quarter-finals at Nottingham, but he was narrowly outpointed in a tough encounter by Craig Austwick from Birmingham.
