The new DVD featuring TV property expert Kirstie Allsopp, designed to enlighten senior civil servants as to the benefits of relocating to the Bradford district, is timely.

The Government has been claiming that it wants more of its departments to decentralise and move out of London. Some have already done so: the Department of Health to Leeds, for instance, and sections of the Ministry of Agriculture to York.

This has the obvious benefit of saving public money because rents and leases in London are much higher than in the provinces. Such a move also provides a chance to rationalise the departments concerned and embrace the latest in new technology to reduce spending.

Civil servants considering a move to Bradford have only to look at how successful it has been for the Inland Revenue. This place has much to offer government departments. There is plenty of office space, or sites are available at modest cost on which new buildings can be tailor-made. The city is a bustling metropolis which is already successfully managing the challenges thrown up by the kind of multi-cultural society Britain is becoming. The city centre has attractive Victorian buildings which will soon be joined by new ones. And, of course, this city is a gateway to some of the finest countryside in the land.

Let's hope that the senior civil servants take note of the content of this 15-minute film and are tempted by it to come along and see for themselves what benefits a move here could bring for their departments.
