Victoria Rangers made the best possible start in their Premier Division relegation battle against Queens-bury when centre Karl Wroe posted the opening try with only two minutes on the clock.

Scrum half Phil Greenwood added the conversion but their joy proved to be short-lived as Bury hit back with tries from stand-off Lee Charlton, centre Trevor Stead and two from second-row forward Kristian Freibach.

Loose forward Stuart Calvert added a couple of conversions and Bury went into the break 20-6 up.

The second half was one-way traffic as Bury slipped into gear with another six touchdowns, with full back Steve Eyles, wingman Damian Smith, centre Gareth Hobson, scrum half Carl Smith, substitute Luke Brearcliffe and the influential Charlton all crossing.

Calvert slotted over five of the extras to take the score to 54-6 - the Vics' biggest defeat of the season - and move Queensbury to within two points of third-from-bottom Birkenshaw.

Clayton extended their lead at the top to three points over Illingworth with a crucial 14-4 success at Westgate Redoubt.

The Villagers were quickly out of the blocks when centre Mark Houlden reached the whitewash, Mark Schofield adding the extra two.

Westgate's Jason Day intercepted to race the length of the field but the conversion attempt sailed wide to close the half 6-4.

Stand-off Scott Pendlebury was soon over on the restart and centre Danny Herbert flew in for an absolute corker from 40 metres out.

The Wakefield outfit responded with their usual vigour but Clayton held firm despite injuries to Schofield and full back Damian Hunter.

Birkenshaw went down 56-4 at Elland while Division One dark horses Dudley Hill had a 42-16 win against Calder Valley at Parry Lane.

Keighley Town suffered a shock 12-4 home defeat to Park Amateurs with Steve Jones scoring their consolation try.

Odsal Sedbergh, who are still looking for their first win of the campaign, deserve credit following a gutsy performance in their 30-8 defeat at Thornhill Trojans.

Bank Top Harriers went top of Division Five after coming away from Cowling Harlequins with a 26-6 victory.

Jason Gelders (2), Cameron Nelson, Mark Bailey and a cracking long-range effort from prop Tom Greenwood ensured that Bank made it ten successive wins.

Queensbury A switched their second- round tie in the Andrew Bennett Trophy to opponents Undercliffe when their ground was declared unfit. Bury posted a penalty from Tom Middleton and Jason Pounder replied with a drop goal.

Undercliffe took the lead with a breakaway try from wingman Andy Feely but on the stroke of half-time, loose forward Brett Marriott squeezed in at the

corner to put Bury narrowly in front at

6-5.

Middleton was again on target when Undercliffe were caught holding down and wingman Lee Baron made sure of his side's visit to Greetland in the third round with another try late on.
