Six of Bradford's seven entrants have qualified for the regional finals of the National Schools' Championships in Blackburn on the weekend of February 5-6.

Five went from the zone finals at Armley as champions, and one qualified as runners-up.

Bradford Grammar School had three qualifiers, but neither the under-11 boys nor the under-13 boys found things easy.

The under-11 boys drew 4-4 with Dore Primary from Sheffield, who were then beaten 5-3 by Brimmington Primary, last year's English champions.

BGS then defeated Brimmington 6-2 to win the age group. Sebastian Tullie and Michael Thornton won all four of their matches, Richard Wall and George Blott winning one each.

The under-13 boys from BGS beat Margaret Ward Catholic School 5-3 in a tight first game before crushing Handsworth Grange 8-0.

BGS were then defeated 6-2 by Springwell Community School, who contained three of the successful Brimmington team from last season.

Marcus Jenkins won four out of six for BGS, Alastair Kwan, Patrick McIntosh and David Wilcock each taking three out of six.

Most impressive of the qualifiers were The Girls' Grammar School, Bradford, who won the girls' under-11 age-group without losing a match.

They defeated South Yorkshire champions Athelstan School and Hunloke Park School (Derbyshire), both by 8-0.

The team, who were thrilled by their success, was Chloe Pinkney (Ilkley, captain), Megan Sadler (Ilkley), Caitlin Gaston (Bingley) and Anisah Rasul (Heaton).

Oakbank College's under-13 girls' team and The Girls' Grammar School, Bradford's under-19 team both qualified as zone winners without having any opposition, and Bradford Grammar School's under-19 boys' team qualified despite only having three players.

They defeated Leek High School 5-3 and gained a winning 4-4 draw with King Edward VII School, triumphing 14-12 on games. Stephen Denny and James Berry won all four of their games, and Martin Bhatoa chipped in with one.

The West Yorkshire winners were competing against county winners from Derbyshire, Staffordshire and South Yorkshire.
