Drugs-squad teams were today raiding the homes of suspected dealers across the Bradford district as figures revealed the major part West Yorkshire Police has played in a national crackdown.

Operation Crackdown, a Govern-ment initiative to increase the number of arrests for class A drug dealing offences and to close more crack houses, was launched last month.

National figures released yesterday showed that 963 people were arrested in the first month of the campaign - with nearly a tenth of them in West Yorkshire. Officers in the county have so far made 111 arrests with nearly half of the suspects having already been charged.

Today up to ten addresses across Bradford and Keighley were being targeted by dozens of officers including the Bradford District Drugs Team, the Operational Support Unit and dog handlers. They were aiming to arrest street-level dealers peddling mainly heroin and crack cocaine.

Further raids are planned for tomorrow and Friday. The operations are taking place following intensive intelligence gathering by police and information rung in by the public through the Dob in a Dealer campaign which allows people to give drug dealing tip-offs anonymously.

This week the Telegraph & Argus revealed new figures which showed that on average one drug dealer a day has been arrested in recent months as part of the local Crackdown in Bradford campaign launched two and a half years ago and spearheaded by Dob in a Dealer.

In that time nearly 1,100 arrests have been made in the district and drugs valued at £3.5m have been seized from the city's streets.

West Yorkshire Police's force drugs co-ordinator Bryan Dent said people in the county had contributed significantly to Operation Crackdown.

He said: "We have achieved 111 arrests in the first month of the campaign and the figures are increasing by the day. During this time, 53 people have been charged and we are awaiting the forensic results of items seized, so this figure could go up."

Mr Dent said that the force had also had great success in recovering firearms and ammunition, among them four live-firing weapons including a mac 11 machine gun, 22 replica firearms and more than 200 rounds of ammunition. Three crack houses have also been closed down.

More than 3,000 calls have been made to Crimestoppers in the Bradford district since Crackdown in Bradford began.
