A PIECE of history is set to take pride of place in Rawdon Littlemoor School's new premises.

The photograph of Rawdon, Yorkshire and England cricketer Hedley Verity was discovered in the attic of the Harrogate Road school as staff prepared to move to new premises.

And now, plans are afoot to restore the picture, dated 1933, and display it in the school when it moves to New Road Side after Easter.

Mr Verity, who toured with the England cricket team in Australia and was sadly killed in World War Two, recently featured in Yorkshire Cricket Club's history of the best players of the last 100 years.

He is photographed being presented with a silver salver from the head of cricket at Rawdon Littlemoor - but no one quite knows who the boy is.

School governor Cyril Snell said he hoped someone would be able to identify the lad making the presentation and be able to remember what the occasion was.

"It was stuffed in the attic of the old school. We've been deciding what to keep and what to get rid of before we go to the new building. This was immediately spotted by the headteacher who thought it was lovely," said Mr Snell.

The picture was taken by Pickles of Otley, is signed by Hedley Verity and also by someone called either Ruff or Rug. It is mounted and would originally have been in a frame, but the frame has long gone and it is need of some restoration.

"It was taken in 1933 and there might still be people around with some memory of it. It would be lovely if we could find someone who recognises it.

"We are quite thrilled to have found it. Verity was very well regarded and the plan is to put it up in the new school," added Mr Snell.

The Harrogate Road school is due to move to New Road Side in just a few weeks time and pupils, staff and friends have spent the week going over old times.

Year 6 ten and 11 year olds have been showing visitors around the Victorian school and sharing their memories and old pictures.

And tonight a special re-union is due to take place when old pupils will come for a last look round the school.

The school, which was condemned by Ofsted inspectors because of the state of the buildings, is due to move into new premises in New Road Side after the Easter holidays.
