Menston St Mary's School U-14s were left devastated after being knocked out in the sixth round, the last 32, of the English Schools FA Cup by a fortunate Whitcliffe Mount team.

Following a powerful, dominating performance, which saw them twice take a deserved lead St Mary's were eventually eliminated following sudden death penalties.

Menston started in a purposeful manner taking a deserved lead with a wonderful 25 yard dipping shot from the inspirational Dom Marwood. Menston played superbly well, kept a fantastic team shape and looked particularly impressive from set plays throughout, dominating for 95 per cent of the game. Their second goal came from a powerful run and finish by Matt Turner.

Whitcliffe produced little throughout the match to trouble the solid Menston back line but scored twice following mistakes by an otherwise faultless defensive display.

Menston continued to try to win the game during extra-time but Whitcliffe Mount cleared off the line twice and scrambled four or five clearances.

It was heartbreak for the Menston team when Whitcliffe scored their first sudden death penalty to book their place in the last 16.

St Mary's were left shell-shocked and to look back at a wonderful missed opportunity to progress.

The squad deserve great credit for their outstanding performances this season and must now lick their wounds and focus on the Airedale and Wharfedale Schools' League Cup and Leeds Schools' Cup.

The squad was Joe Armitage, Joe Murphy, Matt Turner, Matt Woodman, Marc Roberts, Marcus Murrray, Niall Canavan, Will Knox, Declan Little, Josh Humpleby, Tom Kelly, Ben Brookfield, Stephen Bunn, Dom Marwood, Declan Kelly, Stephen Mahoney, Anthony Lee.
