A struggling mental health centre which helps women and children recover from trauma has organised a fun run to raise funds for its survival.

The Isis Project, based in Shipley, helps women and children from all over Bradford who have experienced trauma including domestic violence, sex abuse, eating disorders, schizophrenia and post-natal depression.

Now the project, which offers a range of counselling and therapies, wants men, women and children to put their best feet forward and help them raise £20,000.

The five-kilometre - or three-mile fun run or walk will be held in Lister Park, Manningham on May 22, at noon.

Project manager Sue Sareika said: "We are hoping people will come along and enjoy the afternoon and bring a picnic.

"The money from the event will go a long way to help us keep going."

The project had been funded for the last three years by the BBC's Children in Need, but this money runs out next month, leaving a £20,000 shortfall.

Centre fundraisers have applied to Children in Need again this year but have yet to hear whether they have been successful.

A number of other grant applications have been made, but Mrs Sareika said the charity needed to be pro-active.

"Funding is running out for everybody, partly because there are so many new projects being set up," she said

"Six years ago there may have been 20 projects looking for funding from the same lottery pot, now there are 120. The current financial climate means a lot of charitable trusts have lost their own revenue as well and this has had a knock-on effect on charities."

The project, on Farfield Road, helps 80 women and children a week and it is hoped many of its clients will take part in the event.

Last year a fun run or walk raised £6,000 for the charity and an auction held in October also helped boost funds.

The auction was backed by the Prime Minister's wife, Cherie Blair, and TV presenter Lorraine Kelly, who both donated items.

The centre will be holding a spring fair on March 19 at Shipley Library from 1pm.
