Avenue manager Carl Shutt insists that if any of his squad did not gain confidence by last Saturday's thumping win over Conference North leaders Southport they are in the wrong job.

The rock-bottom Bradford side humbled Southport in the 3-1 victory - a result that was long overdue in the opinion of the Avenue boss.

And tomorrow, Avenue are likely to be playing in front of a large crowd at Hinckley United - entry is free at Middlefield Lane because it is the last match there before Hinckley move to their new Marston Stadium. The club has thrown open their gates and expect a good response.

Shutt has not made any changes from last week. "It all came together, we scored three, hit the bar four times, their keeper made three class saves and they only scored in the last minute. It will have made one or two teams wary of us.

"And if that hasn't given the players a real boost then there is something sadly lacking."

Shutt is also aware that the win has put Hinckley on their guard.

"People don't look at a club's near misses, bad refereeing calls and lack of luck. They look at a club's results and we are bottom of the pile. Hinckley will now know we are capable of beating the best and will be ready for us.

"The key for our players is finding that elusive consistency. They all know we can compete with any team in this division."

The two goals from striker Steve Oleksewycz against Southport will have rekindled his appetite. Danny Walsh will also be looking forward to the game after he scored and hit the woodwork. Craig Smith was another who fulfilled his promise in the best home performance over the last two seasons.

"The only disappointment was Wednes-

day's game being off," said Shutt.

"When you have played like that and got a result to match the performance the next game can't come around quickly enough. We couldn't even train on Wednesday after the midweek game was postponed.

"It was too risky - not just the surface because of the weather but the travelling to the ground. I hope the players have been professional enough to do a bit of running on their own to keep the momentum up and the competitive edge gnawing away inside them. If I was being super critical I would say we should have scored more against Southport. If we had got seven they couldn't have complained.

"It wasn't down to bad finishing, it was just good keeping by Steve Dickinson."
