The price of a 17th century mansion overlooking the Aire Valley has been slashed by more than £1m.

Grade II listed Kildwick Hall is now on the market at £2.25m, cut from its asking price last summer of £3.5m.

It has been re-marketed by Dacre, Son & Hartley minus two cottages and an outbuilding which were in the original package.

Agent Patrick McCutcheon said: "We had surprisingly good interest when it first went on the market in terms of views, and came close to making a sale.

"But there are more people out there with £2.25m to spend than £3.5m, and based on other properties for sale between £1.5m and £2.5m and judging by the way Kildwick Hall has been refurbished, we thought £2.25m was justified."

He said it was essentially the same package but minus two cottages and an outbuilding. The house was built in 1642 and boasts a listed palladian pavilion, great hall, boot room and cellar.

Elements of the old Justice Room and cells, where local felons were dealt with - their initials can still be seen carved in the stone work - have been incorporated in the house. It has five bedrooms, a gymnasium and library.

It is one of the best preserved Jacobean homes in the district and its previous owner was Chris Blundell, a nephew of Sir Ken Morrison, the Morrison supermarket magnate.

It is owned by construction company boss Russell Spence and his wife Nicola.
