A raw and distressing side of life in the area has been brought back into the public eye this week by the good souls at the Salvation Army.

The weekly demand for food parcels by needy people in our midst is on the increase. So much so that the calls for basic provisions have left the Salvation Army cupboard bare, and they are having to use some of their financial reserves to buy food.

There will be those who for a range of reasons may not be able to comprehend the harsh fact that there is such poverty and need on our own doorstep.

But around 40 parcels are distributed each week to families and individuals -- many of whom have been referred to the centre by other voluntary and professional bodies.

The people who need this service obviously have a wide range of problems and are in dire need of assistance -- be it free meals or help with clothing or bedding. Thankfully the Salvation Army does not sit in judgement on them and is prepared to meet their basic requirements without question. The Salvation Army in turn relies entirely on public donations to fund its various projects and programmes.

So what can be done? This area excelled itself in helping the survivors of the tsunami disaster. From calls to this office we know all kinds of people are gearing themselves up for Comic Relief's Red Nose Day to help those in need across the world. We know you are a caring community.

We would simply encourage those who are in a position to do so to buy a couple of extra items this week and drop them off at the Salvation Army.

Let us set a target of replenishing the larder at the Salvation Army and making sure there is sustenance on the table for those in need.
