One passenger in a car was killed and another seriously injured after it crashed into a telegraph pole.

The force of the impact was so severe the pole was uprooted and dragged down the road in the crash in Undercliffe.

And in another incident, a man was seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident.

A firefighter who arrived on the scene minutes after the fatal smash said that one person had been trapped beneath the vehicle which had been "crushed into a horseshoe shape" by the force of the impact.

Fire crews rescued the driver who was taken to BRI with serious injuries.

He said two women in the back of the vehicle had managed to clamber out after the crash which left the MG ZR on its roof on Undercliffe Lane, near to Carlton Bolling School.

The dead man was named today by police as Numan Mehmood Sheikh, 23, of Fernbank Road, Undercliffe. He was the front seat passenger in the car.

Police said the crash was still being investigated and the coroner would be informed of the man's death.

In the hit-and-run accident, on Saturday lunchtime, an elderly man was mown down and seriously injured at the junction of Duckworth Lane and Upper Woodlands Road in Girlington.

Police say the man in his 60s was hit by a blue or purple Subaru Impreza, at around 12.40pm, which then raced away after the accident leaving him injured.

The man was rushed to hospital with head injuries and a broken leg. His condition is described today as comfortable.

After the crash the road was sealed off while scenes of crime officers examined the site. Police have also been viewing CCTV footage from the area and interviewing those who witnessed the collision in a bid to track down the Impreza or its driver.

Police are seeking more witnesses to the accident and anyone with information is asked to call (01274) 376259.

Police are also hunting a man who ran off after a two-car collision in central Bradford yesterday afternoon. The driver of a white Renault Laguna fled the scene of the accident at the junction of Croft Street and Manchester Road before police arrived.

The accident happened at 2.40pm.

The driver of a blue Rover was trapped in the vehicle and had to be cut free by fire crews before being taken to hospital.

Police have not revealed details of his condition.
