Danny Cadamarteri admits he is still fighting to become a regular strike partner for Dean Windass.

Cadamarteri notched his first goal for eight months at Gillingham on Monday but still reckons he has plenty to do to get the job for keeps.

"I don't think any of the strikers who have come into the team have really done enough to stake a regular claim," he said.

"Deano has done extremely well for the majority of the season, scoring a lot of goals and playing well for the team.

"But there's not been one single striker who has complemented him well enough to say they have got the position permanently.

"But Deano also knows that if he has a disappointing run of games, the manager will be on top of him and so will we. Nobody is guaranteed their name on the team-sheet.

"Pre-season is going to be interesting for all of us because the places are still up for grabs."

Cadamarteri, Andy Cooke, Steve Claridge, Joe Brown and on-loan Aaron Wilbraham have all played alongside Windass at various times.

But while Windass has netted 19 goals so far, Claridge now at Walsall is his closest forward rival on five.

"It's been an up-and-down season for everyone," said Cadamarteri.

"The intention in the dressing room from the start was to be challenging for promotion and we've not shown the kind of form we'd have liked.

"But we've got a few games left and hopefully can finish strongly so that we can take that forward to next season.

"Then we'll try to come back stronger and a little wiser from the mistakes that have been made."
