Television cameras may dish the dirt on thoughtless pet owners in a campaign cracking down on dog mess.

A production company will film activists behind 'Poo-Dunnit?', a hard-hitting poster drive aimed at shaming dog walkers into clearing up after their animals.

London-based Silver River was impressed with Umberto Vietri and Neil Riley's internet-based campaign which lets supporters download posters calling on owners to 'bag it and bin it' and will visit Cullingworth for a Channel Four documentary looking into the menace of dog fouling.

Mr Riley said: "The company is looking to do a programme about zero tolerance of dog mess and it's looking countrywide for examples.

"They saw our campaign on the website and were quite interested. A lot of people have given us good feedback already and it's starting to gather momentum."

Posters have been distributed around Cullingworth and Mr Riley said he hoped that would now be extended to the nearby Great Northern Trail.

He said: "I think the trail's fantastic but paths near the trail are littered with dog poo. We've just got to make people more aware of the problem and we're hopeful of getting some posters put up there."

Mr Vietri added: "It's a campaign we started quietly that's beginning to gather momentum. Shopkeepers are putting the posters up, including the pharmacy and the flower shop, and we are hoping more people will display them in their home windows.

"It all started with my wife, Gillian, writing an article on the website. The upshot was that there is some lovely walking around here, but more and more people are failing to clear up after their dogs.

"We thought it would be a fairly unassuming campaign, but it seems to have struck a nerve. We shall wait and see what the television crew makes of it."

Claire Lloyd Evans, researcher at Silver River, said: "Nothing's set in stone and it's in the early stages of production, but we are very interested in finding out what is going on."

Councillor Liz Balding, of Cullingworth Parish Council, confirmed that the village was suffering with the dog dirt problem, especially The Dell.

She said: "That area's visited by Parkside school pupils and other children from the village. I visited a few days ago and it was absolutely appalling. It is amazing that so many owners find the idea of taking along a bag to scoop the stuff up so difficult to comprehend."
