The number of Bradford schools which have been told to ban visitors because of winter vomiting has now risen to 62.

Another 14 premises were added to the restricted list in the last 24 hours in order to prevent the spread of the bug.

It means thousands of parents are now being asked to drop their children outside their schools rather than go into the buildings.

From today, eight schools will be closed to allow a deep clean to be carried out. They are: Iqra Community Primary, High Fernley Primary, Carlton Bolling College, Woodlands Primary, Carrwood Pupil Referral Unit, St Bede's, All Saints CE Primary in Bradford and Worthinghead Primary's reception classes.

The number of schools with restrictions in place has risen from 27 to 62 in just over a week.

Anthony Mugan, head of Bradford Council's education client team, said: "We are still evaluating the results of the co-ordinated approach to tackling the winter vomiting bug when we closed 11 Bradford schools for a deep clean on Friday and Monday.

"We will be assessing the situation over the next week or so to see if the virus returns. If it proves to have been successful it could be a measure we choose to try again in the future in other parts of the district.

"In the meantime, we are urging people to follow the 48-hour rule and remember that children who have had the bug should not return to school until they have been well for at least 48 hours."

Bradford Council's environmental health bosses are advising schools to put restrictions in place if they notice an abnormal number of pupils suffering with sickness and diarrhoea.

Teachers at the restricted schools are being prevented from going into other school sites and the affected schools are also preventing visitors from going into their buildings.
