Muslim messages of peace are being spread across Bradford on buses.

The campaign by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association of Bradford aims to assert the Islamic principles of peaceful co-existence as part of a nationwide effort against extremism.

Dr Mohammed Iqbal, president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association of Bradford North, said: “The true peaceful Islam is poles apart from the hatred that is preached by a minority.

“Such extremists do not represent Islam. Yet through their exploitation of the media, their words and deeds have a damaging impact on community relations and the daily lives of Muslims and non-Muslims.

“By emphasising the values highlighted in this campaign we hope to facilitate a better understanding of Islam so that people are able to judge for themselves the actions of those who claim to speak and act in its good name.

“Islam stresses the promotion of peace in words and deeds.”

Hadhrat Mirza Marsoor Ahmad, worldwide leader of the International Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, said: “A true Muslim can never raise his voice in hatred against his fellow citizens, nor for that matter against the ruling authority or Government of the time.

“He should remain loyal and fully abide by the laws of the land of which he is a subject.”

Shipley Conservative MP Philip Davies has expressed his support for the campaign.

He said: “The initiative will bring communities closer together. By condemning extremism in a peaceful way the campaign will promote a better understanding of Islam and help with community cohesion.”

Later this month posters will also go up at train stations across West Yorkshire, including Bradford Interchange.

Kirklees Council chief executive Rob Vincent has also offered his support for the campaign.

He said: “The Ahmadiyya Muslims have always been quick to bring people together in Kirklees, to respond to challenges that we all face.

“The peace campaign is a timely and determined effort to share understanding of the emphasis on peace and harmony in Islam. It seems a strong initiative to me.”
