An elderly man was taken to hospital today after an explosion in his Shipley home.

Expanding foam had been used to fill a gap in the wall of the house, which Shipley crew watch manager Alan Holdsworth said had created a flammable mixture in the atmosphere.

The crew believe the blast, shortly after 10am, was caused by a spark from a washing machine in the kitchen of the house in West Royd Road, Windhill.

The back door was blown off its hinges and structural damage was caused to the interior of the house.

Mr Holdsworth said: "When people are doing DIY jobs, if they are using spray adhesives or expanding foam, they should always read the label and make sure it is properly ventilated."

The man was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary suffering smoke inhalation and shock. An elderly woman, also in the house at the time of the blast, was not hurt.
