A Shipley Guide group is staging a gang show to raise funds for sufferers of hemiplegia, a neurological condition which leaves one half of the body paralysed.

The pack chose to support the charity Hemihelp because one of its young members, Ellie Jackson, 14, suffers from the condition.

Adele Dolby, leader of the fourth Shipley Guide Unit, said: “Ellie can’t use the arm on one side and she’s got a limp. She suffers quite badly and quite often is not as capable of doing certain things as the other girls.

“She is a lovely, lovely girl. It was her sister who said it would be a good idea as it is a condition no-one really knows about.

“We had a vote on it. The girls wanted to do something to help someone they know who is close to them.”

The effects of hemiplegia are similar to those of a stroke, with sufferers experiencing varying degrees of paralysis in one half of their bodies.

The Hemihelp charity supports children and young people with the condition and their families.

Half the funds raised by the gang show will go to the Guides camp fund, and half will go to Hemihelp.

“Ellie is really pleased that people are going to learn more about it,” said Mrs Dolby. “She joins in with everything and will have a go at anything.

‘‘The girls are really good at helping her and she doesn’t let it get her down.”

The Guides and the Rangers unit will perform sketches, play musical instruments and dance at the gang show.

The show will be held tomorrow at the Shipley United Reformed Church. Tickets cost £2 for adults and £1 for children and concessions.
