A schoolgirl suffered a harrowing sex attack after being grabbed from a street by a gang of five youths, detectives revealed last night.

The terrified 13-year-old was forced into an isolated hut near to a rugby field in Wibsey, Bradford, made to perform a sex act and then abandoned.

She managed to walk home, but was left traumatised and is now being counselled by specialist rape unit officers, said detectives.

The attack happened at about 8pm on Monday near Northfield Road. The girl had been out with a friend and was making her way home on her own when she was approached by a group of older boys.

They grabbed her and dragged her into the nearby hut and assaulted her. The hut is a red container-style building covered in graffiti. The surrounding grassland is strewn with litter, empty beer cans, cider bottles and cigarette packets.

The investigation is being carried out by officers from West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team.

Darryl Bowles, whose house overlooks the rugby field, said: “The police had it all cordoned off round the big red container.

“The police were on there for most of the day, but nobody has really told us what’s happened.”

Mr Bowles said small gangs of youths sometimes met at the field on summer evenings, but he said the area was usually “pretty quiet” in winter.

Another resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “There were police there all day. It’s a horrible thing to have happened.

“Wibsey is usually a quiet area, but it all seems to be kicking off round here at the moment.”

A shopkeeper on Wibsey High Street, who also asked not to be named, said residents would be shocked that another serious incident had occurred in their neighbourhood so soon after the stabbing to death of a nine-year-old boy in Rookes Avenue, Wibsey, for which his older brother has been charged with murder.

Police have issued descriptions of the gang. All five are described as older than the girl and all were wearing dark clothing. One was about 5ft 8ins tall, skinny, and wearing a black top with the hood up and black leather gloves. A second suspect was quite tall and also wore black leather gloves. A third had ginger hair.
