Home owner Alison Whitham is amazed at how many people she talks to who don’t even realise her little road exists.

One of only seven homes in a cul-de-sac on a private road in Keighley, Alison has lived there for almost five years.

“I was looking to move and, although this was one of many houses on the market in the area, it was the only one that I considered,” she says. “Even though it required a lot of work, the house had a nice feel to it.

“The first time I saw it, it was obvious that it could be made into a lovely house, with the kitchen and dining room made into one big room which is just fantastic for entertaining. I also loved the staircase with its lovely stained glass window, the original fireplaces and doors.

“I don’t know much about its history, but I think it was built in 1920 for a single lady who lived there alone.”

That lady must have had plenty of room in which to rattle around, because this detached home has three bedrooms, two reception rooms, a spacious kitchen, larder, family bathroom and a shower room, all set in mature gardens with lovely views.

It’s an imposing and stylish home that, thanks to Alison, offers a combination of modern day convenience with a characterful feel throughout.

“I lived in the house and worked on one room at a time,” Alison recalls. “It was dirty and dusty, and took a long time, but it was worth it.

“The kitchen has been completely replaced and the dividing wall between the dining room and kitchen knocked through to make one large room. The kitchen area is really spacious, with plenty of worktop space.

“The two original fireplaces have been restored and new gas fires installed. I’ve had the boiler replaced and also had some cast iron radiators put in, which are more in keeping with the house.”

After a new bathroom was fitted with a free-standing bath, and a shower room with marble tiling installed, every room was completely re-decorated.

“My favourite room is the kitchen/dining room, which has a large bay window and a lovely original fireplace. It’s used such a lot, with either the large dining table for dinner parties or the small island unit in the kitchen area for a quick bite and a chat.”

It’s certainly an impressive space, with its extensive range of modern base and wall units, worktops and marble floor.

For cooking, there’s an induction hob with built-in double oven, plus an integrated fridge, freezer and dishwasher.

The island unit Alison mentioned also has a Corian worktop with built-in cupboards and drawers. There’s even more storage on offer in the pantry, which has stone banks, and a utility room with plumbing for a washing machine.

Standing in mature gardens with uninterrupted views over the Aire Valley and the countryside beyond, there is a built-on single garage and a double car port.

The gardens are to the side and front, with block-paved private eating area, patio and lawn with shrubs and flowers. There is also a pedestrian access across the front to a small garden area beyond, with more flower borders and shrubs.

“The garden is very easy to maintain, with a large lawned area with borders planted with perennials. We also have a walled courtyard area which is a really private sun trap. It’s lovely to sit outside and eat in the summer.

“The large covered parking area is really handy; it means you can leave the house and get into your car without getting wet when the weather is bad.

“One of the things I have loved about living here is the peace and quiet, and the privacy. There are only seven houses on the cul-de-sac, so the only cars that use the road are driven by people who actually live here. The views are lovely and the house isn’t overlooked.

“I’m going to miss the spaciousness of the house, the privacy and the convenience of being close to town without actually being in it.”
