A former Bradford headmistress has died at the age of 100.

Winifred Wallbank, who spent several years at the helm of Lorne Street First School in Bowling, died peacefully at Highdell Nursing Home in Idle.

The great-great-grandmother trained as a textile designer but decided to go into teaching after running a nursery at St Oswald’s Church in Little Horton during the Second World War.

After a teacher-training course in Northumberland, she started work at Princeville School, Lidget Green, before becoming deputy head at Wapping Road First School and then headmistress at Lorne Street School.

Her daughter, Julie Cook, said: “My mum did a lot for education in Bradford. She put her heart into her work and was very well thought of. She was a wonderful lady.”

Mrs Wallbank, whose husband, Jack, was killed in 1942 while serving with the Royal Navy, spent most of her retirement living with her daughter in Eccleshill and later Idle.
