Shipley Tory MP Philip Davies questioned the wisdom of introducing a ban on under-18s using tanning salons.

His comments came during a second reading debate in Parliament on Labour MP Julie Morgan’s Sunbeds (Regulation) Bill, which calls for the ban to prevent teenagers putting their health at risk on sunbeds.

Her call has the backing of Cancer Research UK and, according to a survey, the support of 87 per cent of the public who do not believe under-18s should use sunbeds, she told MPs.

Mr Davies questioned why she had opted for the “nuclear option” of a ban instead of a system requiring youngsters to show parental consent.

He said he did not intend to block the legislation but wanted to raise concerns that could be ironed out later. It was important measures were “proportionate to the problem”, he said.
