The parents of a young woman who died after being hit by a speedboat in south-east Asia have questioned the length of a jail sentence given to the pilot.
Former Guiseley School pupil Joanna Stillwell died aged 23 after the collision with the boat while she was snorkelling off the coast of the Malaysian island of Redang.
The Sheffield University graduate had completed a geography degree and had met up with her parents, Janet and John, and brother Nicholas in Malaysia.
Five and a half years later, Baharin bin Kamaruzaman has been convicted of negligence in a Malaysian court.
The judge told bin Kamaruzaman he must serve six months in prison and pay a fine of around £1,300.
Joanna’s mother, 57, of Bradford Road, Guiseley, told the Telegraph & Argus: “Is that the value of a life? It’s taken five and a half years to come to that.
“There has been very little communication. We’ve had very little information from the Foreign Office.”
