An architecture student has highlighted some of Bradford district’s hidden and forgotten buildings in a series of striking photographs.

Martyn Sutcliffe, of Thackley, set out with his camera to document places that were once well known and well used, such as the Glen Royal cinema, Shipley, and a fire-damaged dry cleaners on Thornton Road.

Mr Sutcliffe said: “I’ve lived in Bradford all my life and am always keeping my eye open for places of interest to photograph.

“I have a particular passion for ‘urban exploration’ – seeking out places that once had a place in Bradford life, but today just go unnoticed.

“There’s a lot of history tied up with these hidden places. I photographed Conditioning House, off Canal Road, where wool was taken to be conditioned during Bradford’s industrial heyday. I also took pictures of the old abbey in Esholt. You walk down some stone steps and there are the remains of a 15th century abbey. I’ve known about it since childhood.

“I’ve been invited to take photographs of the old cells in City Hall.”

Mr Sutcliffe, 25, a former pupil of Hanson school, is studying a post graduate diploma in architecture at Leeds University.

“Bradford is a fascinating place for architecture because of its industrial heritage,” he said. “The Eastbrook Hall and Lister Mills restorations are really impressive and are examples of how well historic buildings can complement modern structures.” He hopes to hold an exhibition of his photographs in Bradford.
