Two Baildon women are going to the ends of the Earth to raise money for charity – and while one will be shivering in the coldest place on the planet, one will be sweating through one of the hottest.

Lynn Moorhouse, 29, will travel 300km through Sweden’s Abisko National Park and Kebnekaise mountains next month as part of a charity challenge run by the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Meanwhile, Claire Simmonds, 19, will endure temperatures of up to 40C as she crosses the desert in Morocco, camping out in tents carried by camels who will accompany her and the other trekkers on the trip.

Claire, whose family live in Langley Lane, is in her second year at St Andrew’s University in Scotland and will be raising money for its six chosen charities: Medecins sans Frontieres, Young Heroes, the Children’s Hospice Association, Cancer Research, People and Planet and Everyman.

She said Cancer Research was an important charity to her because she lost one of her aunts to breast cancer two years ago, and another aunt is living with cancer now.

The former Guiseley School pupil said: “I wanted to do something that was going to be difficult, that would be an actual challenge.

“People are meant to take about five days to acclimatise but we won’t have that long.”

Lynn has a special reason for her Arctic expedition. Her grandmother, Joyce Moorhouse, of Guiseley, died 15 years ago, aged 76, after suffering from Motor Neurone Disease for almost two years.

Lynn, a quality engineer for Bradford-based Hallmark, said: “It was horrendous. I was at school at the time. It’s taken the best part of 15 years to be able to talk about it and start doing something to raise money for the charity and deal with questions about it.”

Lynn has raised £3,300 of a minimum fundraising target of £4,000 to take part in the expedition by hosting cosmetics parties, bag packing, selling jewellery and encouraging friends and colleagues to sponsor her.

The trip will see her camp out in temperatures as low as minus 30 to 40 degrees and take charge of a team of huskies.

She said: “I’m very excited but slightly nervous. It will be a really great experience.”
