Bobby Petta is mulling over an offer to join City.

City are confident of landing the Dutch winger, who is considering terms as the squad-strengthening plans begin to gather pace.

Colin Todd has already shaken hands on a deal with a centre half and is hotting up his search for another frontman.

City also need a back-up keeper for Donovan Ricketts, who has signed permanently for two years, and a left back to replace released duo Wayne Jacobs and Paul Tierney.

Todd is hoping that left-sided midfielder Petta will start the ball rolling.

"We've spoken with his agent and put forward a deal which we think is fair.

"We certainly aren't miles apart and I would be disappointed if he didn't sign.

"If we can get a couple of signings in quickly then it would show we mean business.

"We aren't going to break the bank but I think players are attracted by the way we performed last season and the fact we will be disappointed if we don't do better next time.

"To get players with the calibre of Petta as well as the type of centre forward we are chasing would be hugely valuable to us."

Todd tried to sign Petta six years ago with Bolton but Ipswich, the winger's club at the time, rejected his approach.

Instead Petta went north of the border for five years with Celtic before a brief spell with Darling-ton in League Two.

Todd added: "I think his confidence was knocked when he went up to Scotland. He didn't play a lot under Martin O'Neill and that affected him a bit. But he's a player that we know can produce and the style we play would suit him down to the ground."

Todd had hinted last week that Petta was not a priority if he brought in two strikers. The fact the 30-year-old has been made an offer would suggest the City boss would settle for one new face up front.

Todd added: "We've exhausted quite a lot of names and most of them are playing at a higher level. We are ambitious and we want to make progress and get out of this division."
