Brett Ferres couldn't quite believe he'd scored his first Super League try against Hull on Saturday night.

It wasn't that he'd somehow managed to barge his way through four Hull defenders to force his way over from five metres out

with his first touch of the game.

It was more that he wasn't even supposed to be playing.

Originally named as 18th man, Ferres only took his place in the side when Rob Parker's wife went into labour.

Having played a full 80 minutes for the senior academy less than 48 hours earlier, Ferres could have been forgiven for feeling a bit heavy legged when Brian Noble sent him into the fray at the KC Stadium.

But he sure didn't look it, backing up a Leon Pryce break to take a pass from Paul Deacon and power his way over within seconds of taking the field.

"I got told to push on Deacs a lot because he was creating a lot of opportunities and I was just there at the right time really," said Ferres, pictured. "It was brilliant. I

didn't know what to do."

He had to endure an

agonising minute or so as video referee Gerry Kershaw checked the

try frame-by-frame, but Ferres was always confident the try would be awarded.

"I knew I had got it down, it was just a case of the video referee seeing it really. But I knew I got it down so I was comfortable," said Ferres.

The nephew of former Bradford half Steve Ferres, Brett joined the club on a schoolboy scholarship and has long been touted as a star of the future as he has progressed through the club's academy ranks.

After making an early splash when he belted veteran Leeds Rhinos prop Barrie McDermott in just his second Super League appearance earlier this season, Ferres has been on the fringes of the squad for most of the season.

Saturday was his sixth first-team appearance and - aside from a try-scoring double over Featherstone in the Powergen Challenge Cup - the first occasion on which he has received a decent chunk of game time.

"I did play about three or four games and was just getting into the swing of it when I was dropped back down to the 21s," said Ferres.

"But I've really enjoyed it since I've come back in and played a couple more games.

"I didn't play a game last year but Nobby said 'just keep working hard and you'll get there'.

"I've been given my chance this year and I'm giving it the best that I've got and it is going well.

"I just try my best every week and if I'm ready I'm ready. But it is a massive ask to get in the first team at Bradford. There are that many good players it is hard to find a spot, so I am happy with the chances I'm getting.

"Steve McNamara keeps telling me to play well for the under-21s and he'll keep gunning for me to play first team, so I just keep making sure my name's in the picture."
