Licensing officials will decide if a Bingley pub should be allowed to extend its opening hours.

The Myrtle Grove in Main Street, which is part of the JD Wetherspoon chain, has applied to serve alcohol between 10am and 12.30am on Sundays to Thursdays and from 10am to 1am on Fridays and Saturdays.

If successful, the pub would join several town premises, including The Ferrands Arms and Suburban Style Bar, in opening after 11pm.

But in a report about the application West Yorkshire Police's licensing department has requested the pub provides registered door staff from 8pm until closing time.

The chain has agreed but it does not believe a personal licence holder is required there at all times as the licensing department has requested.

Today Councillor David Heseltine (Con, Bingley Rural) said he welcomed the application and didn't believe it would lead to anti-social behaviour in the town centre.

He said: "It provides a bit of competition for the other venues. As long as it is managed responsibly I don't see a problem with it really.

"There have been spots of vandalism in the town but you get that wherever you go.

"One would hope the licensees are responsible and would keep disturbances down to a minimum."

But Bev Ford, co-owner of The Shoo Box in Chapel Lane, said: "If people have longer to drink it could cause problems."

A spokesman for JD Wetherspoon said: "As far as we're concerned it's an alternative for people who fancy a drink without going to a nightclub.

"If the extended hours are given it will give the company flexibility if it wants to open that little bit longer."

The application also includes a request to sell alcohol until 2am on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day and until 1am on various saints days and at bank holidays. Children would have to leave the pub by 9.30pm.

The application will be heard by the Keighley and Shipley Licensing Panel at Shipley Town Hall on Monday, June 13, at 2pm.
