A Bradford engineer who spends five hours commuting to and from work every day has helped his company save thousands of pounds a year.

Amjad Khan, 49, of Fernsides Street, is one of only three people in the country to receive a Quality Award from the giant aircraft manufacturer Airbus.

The quality engineer headed up a team of seven people for a project looking at the components of aircraft wings and helped the company make an annual saving of £350,000.

And Mr Khan loves Bradford so much that he drives 208 miles every day to and from his offices in Broughton, North Wales, in his white Toyota Carina.

The father-of-five said: "The positive thing about the city is the feeling of being at home and there is so much variety available here in terms of a social life, shopping and a sense of community that one feels that one belongs here."

Mr Khan came to Bradford in 1975 from Karachi to study Production Engineering at Leeds Polytechnic, now Leeds Metropolitan University. After completing his degree he moved to Niagara Falls, Canada, where he worked for several years before returning to Bradford four years ago.

Mr Khan said that, if he used the train to get to work each day, it would mean travelling ten hours each day and making several changes including taking a bus some of the way.

It costs Mr Khan £22 every day to make the trip to work along the M606, M62, M6, M56 and the M53.

He said: "I'm not working for financial benefit; otherwise I would have stayed in Canada where I was earning three times what I am earning here. I will never move from Bradford.

"We work half a day on Fridays and the only thing I have requested from my employers is that they let me work extra hours during the week and let me have Friday off."

Mr Khan was given the award by Alan White, who is the vice-president of the centre for excellence - wing quality.

A spokesman for Airbus said Mr Khan was a key member of the company's team and the firm was delighted with his work.
